Most of the times that I talk about packing for travel, my mantra is typically, “Travel light.” By that, I mean you can probably take everything you need in a backpack and a suitcase that qualifies as a “carry-on” when you’re flying. Those who know me have heard me say that I can take everything I need for a month of being on ocean cruises.
And … I’ve done that even when I’m onboard as one of the speakers. That means I also need dress clothes, such as a sport coat, slacks, dress shoes, dress shirts, ties, etc. Yes; I fit everything into that 20″ suitcase on the far left. There will be more about packing and traveling light in another travel tip.
You might be asking, “Why, then is there a picture of three suitcases — a 20″, a 24″ and a 28”? Great question!
There will be times when you are going to be in one place for a long time, and you want to take a wider variety of clothes, toiletries and other personal items, perhaps some art supplies, and maybe even a game or two. I like to play cribbage, so I’ll take a cribbage board and a deck of cards when I’m going on a long trip. Well, I am going on a long trip to “one place,” and that “one place” is a cruise ship for a 73-day voyage primarily around the continent of Africa. Even though we will be visiting about twenty-eight ports, I will be enjoying one of the key features of cruising — UNPACK JUST ONCE!
To take all the things I want to have as either necessities or “why nots,” I will be taking at least two of the three suitcases with me. I haven’t yet decided if I am taking all three, even if one of them is mostly empty on the outbound journey, but possibly filled with cooking spices and other items from the our awesome ports of call. And if I end up taking all three, it will not be a problem once I get aboard. As you can see in the photo to the left, all three bags nest nicely into each other. You cannot see the smallest one, but it IS inside the middle bag, which is on the left. And then those two bags are in the largest bag. So, once on the ship, I empty the bags, nest them together, and now I have only one bag to store underneath the bed.
Most major brands have nested sets, if for no other reason than that they all ship inside each other in a single box! Mine happens to be the Centricâ„¢ set in the Samsonite line that I bought directly from Samsonite.
