Month-to-month Update – Possessing a Staycation

Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth

Each month I share an update of what is taking place in my life and share a life lesson that could assist you wherever you are in your journey.

Could was the launch of Solo Summer season. With my target to get as a lot of ladies on the road as feasible each month for Solo Summer season I am launching a new solution or specific give to encourage ladies to go solo. This month’s give is coming subsequent week (3rd June 2019). Join our Facebook group or sign up to our newsletter to get notified when the give begins.

We cannot often afford to travel, so in these moments when we cannot, we can discover to appreciate our personal nation. This month I’ve been performing just that and exploring my personal backyard on a staycation.

The Sculpture Park, close to Farnham

Staycations are also a terrific way of testing oneself for a solo trip. You can expertise what it is like to be a traveller for the day, do one thing touristy, discover a cafe by oneself and just delight in your personal corporation. If you have under no circumstances been abroad just before, this can give you the self-assurance to book a trip by oneself.

I’ve found locations that I didn’t even know existed just before such as the Sculpture Park in Surrey, visited locations that I’ve often wanted to go and under no circumstances had the likelihood to just before – the Solent Forts – and re-visited an island that was as soon as a spot for my childhood holidays (the Isle of Wight). And I’ve gained a new appreciation for my roots, particularly seeing it from the panoramic platform at the top rated of the Spinnaker Tower. In reality, exactly where I was born is basically quite cool!

Portsmouth is a port city on the coast of the south of England. It is wealthy in maritime history and also literary history with popular authors such as Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling and H. G Wells all possessing previously lived right here. Getting on the coast, it is only 10 minutes away from the Isle of Wight by hovercraft and there are international ferries to France, Spain and the Channel Islands (exactly where I as soon as lived and worked).

It has so substantially maritime history. Portsmouth Dockyards are house to HMS Victory (Lord Nelson’s ship), the HMS Warrior (the biggest and most potent warship of her day), and the Mary Rose – the warship of the Tudor King, Henry VIII. It is mentioned that Southsea Castle is exactly where Henry VIII apparently watched his beloved ship, the Mary Rose, sink to the bottom of the water.

Across the harbour in Gosport is the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, exactly where you can see the only remaining Second Globe War era submarine (and appear by means of the periscope!)

The city has so a lot of forts to discover such as Fort Nelson, a defensive fort on the top rated of Portsdown Hill (which I made use of to contact “Chalk Mountain” when I was a kid), with tunnels and artillery to learn.

The Solent Forts

But the greatest forts are the ones in the Solent. You cannot beat taking a boat ride from Gunwharf Quays to a single of the 3 forts in the Solent off the coast (there are 4 but a single is privately owned), which was constructed to shield Portsmouth Harbour from the enemy. You can pop across for an afternoon tea, take element in a cocktail mixing class or just loosen up in the hot top rated on the upper level and watch the cruise ships sail previous.

This month, Portsmouth is hosting the country’s national occasion to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Normandy and the D-Day Landings, and apparently the President of the United States is attending (hopefully I will be away just before then :))

It is so surprising what’s in your house town when you start off researching. I spent years travelling and living abroad and wanting to escape my house town. Getting back this year has offered me a new appreciate of my roots.

Summer season is also the fantastic time to attempt one thing new as well. By no means definitely a single for water sports (I’m additional of a land girl), I attempted sailing for the 1st time and was at the steering wheel of a RIB, thanks to an open day at my regional sailing club. Possessing grown up by the sea I have under no circumstances taken benefit of the Solent. And it produced me realise that there’s a complete planet out there just on my doorstop.

Sandown on the Isle of Wight

So the lesson for this month is that there’s often a new way to see a spot, regardless of whether it is up higher in a tower with a panoramic view or regardless of whether you are attempting one thing new such as exploring it from the waters edge on a boat.

If you are unable to travel abroad this summer season, is there someplace in your house nation that you have often wanted to go? Perhaps you could go on a day trip, or attempt a new activity for the 1st time? There’s often an expertise to be had…

I am so sad to finish the post on a devastating note. I didn’t know regardless of whether to involve this on my post but I wanted to honour the life of a excellent travel blogger. Rachel Jones from Hippie in Heels tragically passed away this month. Though I had under no circumstances met Rachel in particular person she kindly agreed to do an interview for my web site and I also did a single for hers. We exchanged many emails and her warm, friendly character just shone by means of. Rachel was a gorgeous soul who inspired so a lot of ladies to travel to India and I really feel so blessed to have crossed paths with her. She will be so missed. Lisa x
