Mae West after stated, “Good girls go to heaven—bad girls go everywhere.” And, apparently, they want to go everywhere alone.

A new survey by OnePoll and Travelex found that practically 1 in 4 travelers choose traveling alone—a trend becoming led by financially safe girls more than 30. The Solo Travel Society on Facebook has a lot more than 225,000 followers, and 63% of them are female. And a current Booking.com survey identified that 65% of Americn girls are taking vacations without having their partners—something many in the forefront of travel have been seeing on the ground for a although.

“We are getting girls are traveling solo a lot more than guys,” Andrea Ross, the managing director of tour operator Wild Frontiers, told Newsweek. “About 65 % of our solo travelers are female, ranging in age from their 30s up to their 80s. But there’s a especially huge group of girls in their 40s and 50s traveling solo.” In the previous couple of years, Ross has observed a 15 % year-more than-year uptick in women booking trips alone.

Lee Thompson, co-founder of the millennial travel group Flash Pack says 80 % of his company’s consumers are initially time solo travelers, and 60 % of them are girls.  Stephanie Turner, president  of Brentwood Travel in St. Louis (a member of Ensemble Travel Group), stated girls are taking off alone for the reason that “either no 1 else who will travel at their level or they are tired of waiting for other folks.” Turner revealed that these independent ladies devote about $7,500 on typical per trip, far above the national typical of just $1,145.

Just for the reason that these girls are traveling solo does not imply they are single, although.

“[They may have] mates who have began households and are unable to accompany them,” says Ross. “They may perhaps have a substantial other who is not interested in traveling to an adventurous destination—or just does not want to travel—so rather than remain at house they are taking the plunge and traveling solo.”

And they want excitement beyond the protected confines of Europe or the U.S. All of the operators we contacted agreed that girls are traveling to a lot more exotic destinations—checking off bucket list locales and pushing their limits. “India is especially preferred with female travellers—as is North Africa and the Middle East,” says Ross.

Of course, solo travel comes with some dangers, in particular for girls. Businesses like Wild Frontiers let them to reap the rewards of a group without having getting to force friends and loved ones to tag along.

“When we speak to single girls travelers, each at travel shows and more than the telephone, the common message is that for numerous factors, they would rather be in a group,” says Ross. “1 cause clearly is safety—I feel that is why we see a lot more single girls joining group trips to India, Africa, and the Middle East. It just provides some peace of thoughts and they can take pleasure in these places without having worrying.”

Thompson has noticed a lot of American travelers embracing an attitude of carpe diem: “We’re seeing a genuine want for epic, game-altering travel. Folks no longer want to sit by a beach in Cancún for two weeks rather, they’re seeking to max out their annual leave with major, difficult adventures that make them really feel alive and revived. The type of expertise that stays with you for months—off-radar travel in untapped destinations, with a taste of nearby culture, unbelievable wildlife and comfort-busting experiences.”

Africa, he reveals, holds good appeal for these adventure travelers.

“You can do something from dawn safari walks on the Serengeti to paddle-boarding the Cape Peninsula or taking a street meals safari rounded the souks of Marrakech.”

Beyond checking destinations off their bucket list, American girls are also seeking to expertise some thing exclusive and disconnect from their lives for a bit.

“A huge quantity of our travelers who actively venture on solo trips are normally seeking to disconnect with their normally-hectic each day routines, operate and house, in favor of reconnecting with themselves in a distinctive atmosphere,” says Marta Tucci, co-founder of Naya Traveler. “Solo travelers have a tendency to be a lot more versatile and adventurous for the reason that they never have the constraint of getting to share the journey with somebody else.”

Solo travel is also a way for girls to reconnect with themselves.

“Heading out to attempt these experiences alone—albeit with the assistance of a group of like-minded strangers—means you are a lot more attuned to the entire factor,” says Thompson. “Instead of concentrating on your mates or loved ones, you are completely in the moment and soaking it all up. [It’s] an chance to push your limits and break your comfort zone. Genuine, nearby experiences are also crucial and we reside in an age of disconnect exactly where we’re all increasingly lost behind our screens. Folks have a genuine will need to dial down and reconnect with the landscape [and there’s] a clear appetite for obtaining back to nature and immersion in the good outdoors.”

And a lot of female solo travelers want to have a optimistic effect on the areas they travel to. Wild Frontiers, which invests in educations and disaster relief projects in the nations it visits, was named Finest Ethical Travel Corporation by The Guardian in 2012.)

“They are picking to travel with us for the reason that of our commitment to the communities and to traveling proper,” says Ross. “Some of us are currently preparing our subsequent adventure—to Sudan.”
