Sharing is caring!

The region about Colle Santa Lucia is a single of my favourite components of the heart of the Dolomites. From major mountains to wild adventures, it has it all.

Perched higher above the two valleys Val Fiorentina and Val Cordevole beneath, and surrounded by the iconic mountains of the region, Civetta, Pelmo and Marmolada, Colle Santa Lucia is the best base for these who want to play in Italy.

It is also the gateway to the Giau Pass, and if you are fortunate you may even hear the locals about right here chatting in Ladin, their personal dialect.

This is a seriously epic portion of Italy, created even a lot more so on a powder day in winter!

In the course of my time in the Dolomites, I spent a fair quantity of time possessing adventures around Colle Santa Lucia and the Passo Giau.

The leading of the Passo Giau, which connects Cortina d’Ampezzo with Colle Santa Lucia and Selva di Cadore, is spectacular.

On my second day I woke up to a layer of fresh snow on the mountains, with moody clouds drifting back and forth across their peaks, making an atmosphere of mystery and beauty. Get in touch with me an Instagrammer, but I do appreciate moody climate, which the Dolomites has in spades.

Currently we have been going snowshoeing with locally primarily based operator TravelSport who runs guided adventures about the Passo Giau.

As we wound our way up towards the mountains, the clouds started to lift a bit, revealing a monochrome globe with a tiny fresh snowfall.

1 of my favourite issues about traveling in the Dolomites (and in the mountains of Europe in basic) is how individuals have settled for centuries higher up in the mountains, and you can drive in in between them all.

The roads can be terrifying, and do not be like me, make certain you get a car or truck employ with winter snow tires on a trip to the Dolomites in winter. Otherwise you will be stuck placing on chains which is SERIOUSLY the worst!

Also, please note that at least in Venice, they are now requiring all foreigners to have an international drivers license to employ a car or truck (I’ve under no circumstances necessary it just before, what a discomfort in the ass!)

I was in a position to get a single expedited more than but it definitely created the starting of the trip a discomfort. On leading of becoming American, exactly where I nevertheless do not know how to drive manual (most employ vehicles are manual in Italy), it indicates hiring vehicles are really limiting.

Anywho, exactly where was I?

Right here chocolate box towns dot the mountainsides, and on the way up to the Passo Giau you will pass by way of quite a few a quaint and charming village.

And if you are a passenger in the car or truck of a nearby, you may be like me, and yell “stop the car” every single couple of minutes to take a photo.

Shameless.

But seriously, the light soon after a snowfall ends in the mountains is commonly magnificent. The globe is quiet and nevertheless and peaceful and you generally get crazy beams and rays of lights as the sun starts to peak by way of the snow clouds.

And if the snow sparkles on the ground? Properly, I’ve just died and gone to Instagram heaven.

Sooner or later we created it to our location in the Passo Giau to go snowshoeing, appropriate as the clouds started to pack in once more.

A absolutely silent globe of white, nevertheless and cold, noiseless except for the crunching snow beneath our snowshoes, we created our way into the clouds.

Man, there is nothing at all I appreciate a lot more than fresh snow.

Except for perhaps Jon Snow. BOOM.

Just about every so generally the surrounding mountains would peak by way of the clouds, displaying their faces for a couple of minutes just before disappearing into whiteness once more.

So tantalizing, it was killing me!

Of course as soon as we created our way back down for lunch at a single of the chalets (show me the polenta) the clouds started to lift once more.

I’d be back!

Later on, all on my personal at the finish of the day, I created my way back up the Passo Giau for sunset. Cold from a day out in the snow, I was bundled up and yes, I was wearing my favourite onesie for warmth. No judgements please.

There are dozens of hairpin switchbacks on the way up the mountain towards the leading, and generally I am ok oh crazy mountain roads – I reside in New Zealand soon after all – and I was decidedly lazy and actually want to get to the leading devoid of placing the chains on.

Seriously if somebody can teach me how to place on tire chains devoid of my fingers freezing off and acquiring covered in dirty snow, I’d appreciate a lesson.

Sliding in nearly sideways I created it to the leading in 2WD with summer season tires, wahoo! Champion!

And man was it attractive.

The clouds moved back and forth more than the peaks about the Giau Pass, and I popped on my snowboots and followed some of the trails by way of the snow til it began to get dark.

If I didn’t appreciate the Dolomites just before, I do now.

Have you been to the Dolomites just before? Are you a fan of fresh snow as significantly as me? Spill!
