Right after seven years exploring the globe and living out of a suitcase, I ultimately have a spot to contact my personal. A single of the most significant struggles of lengthy term travel is the inevitable (possibly not for some, but for me!) wish to ultimately have a spot to contact household.
You could possibly don’t forget a year and a half ago I announced I had purchased my initially apartment: a tiny 1 bedroom above my bakery in Tasmania. This was my initially household and whilst I loved how compact and quaint it was, it wasn’t lengthy ahead of I outgrew the novelty of living in a tiny 1 bedroom and decided I wanted to devote some time living in Los Angeles, so place my spot up for rent (totally furnished) and place my items in to storage once again.
Rapidly track to 2019, I realised just how a great deal I missed feeling like I had a household and someplace to return to, even if it wasn’t all as well usually or consistently (I do not believe I will ever cease travelling completely!)
My household was currently rented out for a different year so I began hunting for a new spot and to save a handful of bucks, wanted to uncover a spot I could renovate and make my personal.
I was in Bali when I saw this property on the web and jumped at the chance to obtain it (now that I believe of it, I didn’t even inspect the property ahead of I committed to it!)
The Home: An 1890’s Terrace House
So let me set the scene. The property is split across 3 levels: living, dining and kitchen on the ground level, a guest bedroom, bathroom and balcony on the second level and two oversized bedrooms with a massive balcony on the third level.
The property was constructed in 1890, which means it not only has a lot of history but also a lot of charm (as so numerous persons have commented to me these previous handful of weeks – they do not make them like this any longer!)
The Renovation: My goals
I’ll be tackling the renovation in a handful of stages – each since of time (I’m nonetheless travelling really often) and revenue (household renovations are not low-priced, even when you do most of it your self!)
The initially step will be to rip up the carpets in the whole property, sand and polish the oak floorboards and restore them to their former glory.
The second step will be to paint the whole property in Antique White and the trimmings in a creamier tone referred to as Hogs Bristle.
The third step will be to tackle the staircase: sand back exactly where the carpet was and paint the staircase white.
The fourth step will be to make in an ensuite in my bedroom and an oversized wardrobe (yahoo!)
Right after these main projects I want to do a lot of DIY projects about the property – specially the beneath-staircase wine cellar I talked about in my property tour video.
The First Few Weeks
I’m writing this post right after 3 weeks living in the property and so currently have some updates to share! The carpets came off (rather conveniently) and the floorboards are in fantastic situation. I had a builder on website to replace all of these that necessary it and shortly thereafter started sanding and had a expert come in to varnish the boards.
The paint job is taking a lot longer than anticipated – even right after placing in ten complete days with really handful of breaks! Every space is taking three-four coats to cover these crazy colours (the red, green and black have been not very to my taste).
I’ve been travelling the previous week and timed this completely with the floor varnishing (turns out you can not reside in the property for five-7 days whilst this is carried out and the smell is astounding… even my neighbours complained!)
A lot more updates to come!
