(GEORGETOWN, Texas) The “Red Poppy Capital Of Texas,” Georgetown, Texas, will celebrate its 20thAnnual Red Poppy Festival April 26 – 28, in honor of red poppy season it is 1 of the handful of areas in the United States exactly where red poppies develop naturally. The town’s deep-rooted history with the poppies started when Henry Purl Compton (aka “Okra”), a soldier in the American Expeditionary Forces through WWI, sent poppy seeds from Europe back dwelling to his mother in Georgetown, Texas. His mother planted the seeds at her dwelling positioned at 507 East 7th St. and with some assist from the birds, bees, and individuals of Georgetown, the seeds immediately spread beyond her dwelling all more than town.
