My 2019 Travel Ambitions – This Battered Suitcase

Photo by Oliver Niblett on Unsplash

I consider everyone who has ever followed this weblog in any capacity can agree with me when I say: I kinda suck at blogging. Some months I post a lot, other folks I barely post at all, and overlook about social media… that is all more than the spot, as well. I guarantee a lot of posts – I’ll get to them, I swear! – and commence a lot of series that I in some cases abandon.

Wait, are you nonetheless reading? I’m not promoting myself quite nicely, I’m conscious.

ANYWAY… a single point I regularly create each single year is my list of dream trips, since it entails all my favourite factors: generating lists, speaking about travel, and pretending I’ll magically have adequate dollars and time to really achieve the majority of the trips.

I’m not definitely a single for generating resolutions – I’ve been saying I’ll create far more, study far more, physical exercise far more, and consume healthier due to the fact the 90s – but I do delight in writing down the areas I’d really like to see and then searching back at the finish of the year and seeing if I followed via any of them.

Final year’s list, for instance, was more than-the-leading to the max. I would have necessary a private plane and an further handful of months in 2018 just to match it all in, but it is generally enjoyable to dream. Of the trips I described, I achieved (virtually) 4 of them: I went to Namibia, I travelled about Western Canada, I did a mini road trip in the states (among Arizona and Nevada) and a longer road trip about Mississippi, and I visited Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada in the Caribbean (while I snorkelled, not scuba dived). I also managed to travel rather extensively about my household province of Manitoba, check out London for a handful of weeks, check out Phoenix twice, and get to Texas for the quite initially time.

This year I’m going to hold it a bit easier, or maybe a small bit far more manageable, since that is what I’m focusing on ideal now in my life: slowing down, calming down, and remembering to delight in as quite a few moments as I can. If some of these moments take place to be whilst I’m on the road, fantastic. If not, I’m settling in definitely nicely into my household in Canada, and I’m appreciating the quiet factors in life a lot far more these days: spending all day reading (*cough* watching RuPaul’s Drag Race *cough*), cooking, and going for extended walks with Dottie.

And that is a further point: I now have Dottie in my life, so I cannot just drop every thing and travel anytime I really feel like it. I’ll have to program ahead a lot far more, which is not necessarily a terrible point.

So without the need of additional ado, here’s exactly where I’d really like to travel in 2019.

Exploring Hecla Island solo

Discover Even Extra of Manitoba

That is right… I’d really like to see even far more of my household province in 2019. Given that moving back to Winnipeg roughly a year ago, I’ve definitely grown to appreciate all that this prairie province has to present I’m hardly ever bored or really feel restless about wanting one thing to do or see. Manitoba is chock-complete of attractive parks and beaches, not to mention all of the outstanding festivals and events that take place all through the year, so I want to knowledge it all.

This year I’ll be partaking in some of my favourite festivals once more – Festival du Voyageur in February and Folk Fest in July – but I’d really like to do even far more. If I could ultimately make it to Churchill to see the polar bears… even superior!

Road Trip About Utah

I’ve had an obsession with taking a road trip about Utah ever due to the fact I saw Thelma and Louise, which was partially filmed about Moab, Utah. I would really like to see Monument Valley it may possibly be an Instagram staple, but that does not imply I shouldn’t see it for myself. There’s just one thing about these rocky landscapes that make me want to put on a pair of dusty cowboy boots and jump in a convertible. I could do without the need of the ending of Thelma and Louiseand pretty a great deal every thing else that occurs in that film, but you get my drift.

Pay a visit to Tennessee

Ever due to the fact my wonderful trip to Mississippi final April, I’ve been dying to see far more of the South. Even though I had a short foray into Texas this year, the massive city of Austin felt definitely cosmopolitan and not necessarily “Texan”, which is a dumb point for a person who has in no way been to Texas to say, but that is how I felt.

I’m a large fan of the music of the South, particularly classic nation (consider Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, et.) and I’d really like to check out the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. I also really like classic soul, rhythm and blues, and gospel – Sam Cooke is my favourite singer of all time – so I’d really like to verify out that scene in Tennessee the well-known Stax Records, a record corporation that shaped the sound of Southern Soul, was founded in Memphis, and fairly a great deal each artist that signed to or recorded at Stax in the 1960s is on heavy rotation on my record player (Otis Redding, William Bell, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett, and so on). Final year I saw exactly where Elvis was born (Tupelo, Mississippi), so I’d really like to check out Graceland, as well.

Immediately after going to some of the stops on the Civil Rights Trail in Mississippi, most notably the extremely moving Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson, I would like to do the similar in Tennessee, particularly the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis (which is constructed about the former Lorraine Motel, the motel exactly where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated).

Tour South Africa, eSwatini, and Mozambique

If you have been reading my weblog extended adequate, you know that I went to South Africa to celebrate my 30th birthday (which includes Botswana and Zambia). You may perhaps also recall that I had a definitely terrible time in Cape Town, while it was completely my personal fault – I drank as well a great deal, got caught up with a weird crowd of backpackers, and didn’t do what I wanted to do, sightseeing-sensible. I have generally vowed to go back to South Africa, since it is a favourite nation of quite a few men and women I know.

I’ve been fortunate adequate to have noticed 10 of the 54 nations in Africa, and I would really like to see even far more. I have wanted to go to Mozambique for years – Tofo sounds like my fantastic beach paradise – and I am a large fan of wildlife trips, particularly safaris. Kruger National Park in South Africa has been a target of mine for a extended time, and I’d really like to see the culture of eSwatini up close.

Fortunately, my dear pal Helen of Rock My Adventures is hosting this precise trip in October and November! I went on her tour to Namibia in August 2018 and it was a single of the greatest trips of my life. If I can swing this a single, I will absolutely be joining her once more in 2019.

Travel About the Balkans

You didn’t consider I’d overlook, did you?? I have place this precise travel dream on each single list I’ve created for the previous 4 years, and but it somehow keeps eluding me. I had the complete program in 2018 – I was going to fly back to London, commit a handful of weeks there, and then travel solo about Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Albania for a month or so. But then, as I wrote in a post final March… I just couldn’t do it. Anxiousness and a deep wish to slow down won, and I’m so glad that they did.

Anything I’d like to address far more on the weblog in the new year is mental wellness, since I have in some cases lied or downplayed how I’m definitely feeling each in particular person and on-line. I attempt to hold it true as usually as I can, but when I commence falling into these bouts of depression, I cannot create about something, let alone how I’m feeling. There’s also a bit of ego involved of course I do not want every person (i.e. ex-boyfriends, hi boys) realizing when I really feel like shit, when I really feel lonely, when I’m worried about finances, when I’m bummed about a current romance. I try to remember acquiring an e mail from a person when I lived in London that mentioned, “I want I had your life,” and there I was, lying in bed at 2pm, unable to consider of a single cause to get up.

2017 was a fairly awful year for me, travelling excepted. I felt like I was in this definitely dark, lonely spot, and I couldn’t claw my way out. Fortunately, 2018 was a great deal superior – while I definitely struggled for a handful of weeks in November – and I realized it was superior since I was listening to what I definitely necessary. When I went back to London final February I believed I’d be totally healed from the year just before, and I was completely incorrect. Getting in London once more brought back all of the feelings I hadn’t totally worked via, and there was no way I could make it on a solo adventure of the Balkans at that point.

That getting mentioned, I am certainly feeling a great deal superior about life at the moment, so who knows? Probably 2019 will ultimately be my year to discover that portion of the globe. I know that that was a weirdly raw moment sandwiched into a enjoyable list of travel destinations, but the point is, even if someone’s life appears attractive and glossy on-line, we have no concept what’s definitely going on. I am so thankful for what I have, and I recognize my privilege and my very good fortune, but no matter what, we’re all human, and we’re all going to really feel shitty in some cases. I’m also ready to create about the shitty instances even far more, since let’s face it, no one desires a further goddamn “where to consume in Paris” guide or some naval-gazing blogger’s list of dream trips.

I mean… yay! Serbia! *cough*

Moving on…

Return to Italy

You also didn’t consider I’d overlook about Italy, did you? Italy is my favourite nation in Europe, and I miss it consistently. Even though living in London, I’d usually take benefit of inexpensive hostels and extremely low-cost airplane tickets (I when booked a flight to Genova for $15) and just go discover a new-to-me city for a extended weekend. While I would select the life I have now more than the life I had in London in practically each regard, man oh man do I miss these low-cost and simple trips about Europe.

If I had been to return to Italy this year, I would really like to check out either the Puglia area or the Amalfi Coast, each of which have been in my sights for years. Here’s hoping I can make it take place in 2019.

Return to New York City and See San Francisco for the Very first Time

I’m lumping these two cities collectively since it is my list, damn it. I hold saying I’ll return to New York – I haven’t been due to the fact I was a teenager, going to a handful of months just before 9/11 – and now that I’m older and really have good friends there, I’d really like to see it once more. I’m most excited about the museums, the meals, and the theatre.

San Francisco (and most of the American west coast, which includes Washington and Oregon) is a single of my individual travel oversights I have generally felt that I’d definitely like San Francisco, and if I could figure out a way to check out for a handful of days this year, I’d be overjoyed.

Pay a visit to Suriname and Guyana

For some cause, these two nations have definitely been on my thoughts lately. Essentially, no. I can inform you specifically why they’ve been on my thoughts they are two of the 4 nations I haven’t been to in South America (Paraguay and Venezuela are the other folks) and I lately read M Train by Patti Smith (a single of my heroes) and she talks about going to Suriname in the 1970s. Granted, she tends to make every thing sound fucking fantastic, even when it is the opposite, but it sparked an interest in seeing if I could check out these two neighbouring nations. If everyone has been, I’d really like to hear about it!

Lastly Travel to Antarctica

OK, OK, I promised that this list was going to be somewhat affordable, and this a single ain’t, at least not in 2019. Going to Antarctica has been on my dream list for my complete life, and I’m 100% constructive I’ll get there a single day… I just have no concept when. Let’s just place this on 2019’s list as a tribute to considering positively, shall we?

I’m not going to lie… I could hold going. I’ll generally have my list of “one day”s… Jordan, Georgia, travelling overland via the “stans” of Central Asia, Madagascar, sailing about the South Pacific, Sierra Leone, The Maldives, Iran, Papua New Guinea… oh, and Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail. I definitely want to do that a single day.

Exactly where would you really like to travel in 2019?
