A South Coast trip, a new type of coffee and a brave book giveaway

Farewell March, hello April! I do not know about you, but this year appears to be going at two distinct speeds for us.

It is zooming by on a single hand, and but it also appears to be crawling previous in slow motion, packing far more and far more into every week for us as time progresses.

This week is a good instance. We’ve been organizing and seeking forward to our trip down the South Coast of New South Wales for ages, but at the identical time it feels like only yesterday that we initially had plans.

In this Weekly Edition, we’re displaying you a glimpse of our anniversary celebration down in Mollymook at the stunning Bannisters by the Sea, we’re at an incredible friend’s book launch (verify out how you can win a signed copy of Her Middle Name is Courage right here) and we have a new specific edition coffee to attempt – with pure gold flakes no much less!

There’s also the ubiquitous and unreasonable quantity of meals to inform you about and some leading guidelines on locations to go in Sydney and in the Shoalhaven area as well of course.

We hope you delight in this Weekly Edition.

Cheers – Jim &amp Christina xx

Road through the countryside down to the NSW South Coast

The drive down to the South Coast and Shoalhaven area of New South Wales is an quick two-three hours based exactly where you are stopping. We’re on our way to the excellently named Mollymook, which is a coastal town ¾ by way of the Shoalhaven.

It is good getting back on the road once again. Christina and I really like a road trip, and even far more so when we’re celebrating.

Our wedding anniversary is 8th March, but since the month was so busy, we decided to delay the day for when we’re away.

The cause we’re heading to Mollymook is to verify out Bannisters by the Sea, a hugely regarded coastal retreat hotel. It is also house to a single of renowned chef Rick Stein’s seafood restaurants, which is also pretty thrilling for us.

Here’s a rapid highlights reel of our time at Bannisters by the Sea – we’ll be operating complete critiques of the hotel and Rick Stein’s fantastic restaurant pretty quickly for you.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook

Bannisters is named right after the small headland it sits on that juts out amongst the two stunning beaches of Mollymook. It was after a road-cease style hotel but owner Peter Cosgrove (not the ex-Lawyer Common btw) flipped it into a luxury retreat style hotel that requires complete benefit of its distinctive place and the spectacular views that come with it.

The beautiful factor about this house even though, is that it has held onto that mid-century modern day really feel of the original motel. Far from creating the spot really feel dated, Bannisters has a fantastic retro vibe that somehow puts you at ease.

Other hotels have completed comparable factors considering the fact that then. Halcyon Home at Cabarita Beach in northern NSW and the Ace Hotel and Saguaro in Palm Springs in the States have utilised the great bones of old motels to generate incredible locations to keep. But Bannisters did it initially and did it nicely.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook bedroom and bathroom

Our area – a Spa Retreat area – is beautiful. Spacious and nicely-appointed, it has all the creature comforts and mod cons of a modern hotel but with a handful of cool factors added in.

The giant window/wall separating the bathroom and the bedroom tends to make the area really feel larger and offers you lots of organic light in the bathroom as well. Do not be concerned even though, if you want some privacy when you are taking a shower, there’s a roller blind you can pull down as well.

But this is genuinely the drawcard for this area. The hot tub on your personal private wooden deck overlooking the ocean is bliss.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Pool Bar and sea view

On the reduced levels of the hotel is the pool bar with its incredible infinity pool, loungers and private cabanas. The bar itself has vistas more than the water and down to the beach, and the cocktail and meals menus right here are pretty tempting.

Pool Bar at Bannisters by the Sea Mollymook - us

If nothing at all else, you need to come down right here for a negroni. They make them nicely right here.

We delight in our drink and watch dolphins play beneath just before heading up for dinner…

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Rick Stein's seafood restaurant

We’re pretty excited to be dining at Rick Stein’s onsite restaurant tonight. We’ve each been large fans of his for so lengthy and have watched so a lot of of his cooking shows.

The smell of fresh seafood cooking in the kitchens as we stroll in has our stomachs grumbling even just before we’ve heard the specials or looked at a menu.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - breakfast with a sea view

Breakfast at Bannisters by the Sea is a relaxed but refined affair. The continental style buffet and bagel station has lots to tempt you without the need of more than-filling you. No point consuming so substantially there’s no area for all the other scrumptious locations to attempt in the location.

The view even though is a factor you can never ever more than-indulge on.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Ulladulla fishing port

Soon after breakfast, we hit the road to discover the surrounding location. Ulladulla – likely the largest town in the direct location – is as cute as the other towns of Mollymook, Narrawallee and Milton, just larger. It also has a operating fishing port, exactly where you can watch the boats coming in with their hauls, operating in drydock and rigging up for the following day.

There’s also a fish and chip shop right here that is supposed to be quite great.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Cupitt Winery Milton

Our subsequent cease is on the way to Milton, an adorable small town inland from Mollymook. We didn’t realise that there had been any wineries in this location, but we stand corrected. Cupitt’s is a family members-run vineyard, micro-brewery and fromagerie, and its cellar door does an superb tasting.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Cupitt Winery Milton cellar door

We’re fortunate adequate to meet Gen (Jen with a ‘G’ or Gin with an ‘e’ as she explains) at the cellar door, who requires us by way of the scrumptious variety accessible at Cupitt’s at the moment.

We get on like we’ve identified every other for years and even come across out we share the identical date for our anniversaries, which is quite cool.

It could be that Gen has wooed us brilliantly that we come across ourselves signing up for the wine club right here. But I assume it is far more probably that the wine’s just that great. Also, you get a good discount on your initially case of wine and at the bar and restaurant.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Cupitt Winery Milton cheese board

Soon after saying our farewells to Gen, we head straight for the bar and order the cheeseboard, which is loaded with some of the ideal of the Cupitt fromagerie that Gen’s also sold us on… not that that took substantially perform either!

I’ve also ordered an IPA to have with lunch. All I can say is I want we lived closer to Milton – even though on the other hand, I assume my waistline is grateful.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Pilgrims vegetarian cafe Milton

Prior to we head back to Sydney, we pop into Milton to verify the town out. It is a charming small spot complete of boutiques and cafes.

We had been advisable a lot of distinct locations to consume when we’re down right here, but a single spot in specific is Pilgrims, which is a vegetarian cafe.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Pilgrims vegetarian cafe Milton burger

Neither of us are as well hungry at this point, but we’re keen to see what the fuss is about about Pilgrims. We order a Bliss Burger, which is packed so complete it is falling out when it arrives.

The mixed grain pattie is not fairly like meat, which is likely the concept, but it is complete of flavour and has a good texture. With it comes fried onion, avocado, grated cheese (which would have been far better if it was far more melted), tabouli, sprouts and peanut sauce all on a toasted wholemeal roll. Even amongst the two of us it is lots of meals and pretty tasty as well.

They also do good coffee right here, which is generally great to know.

Bannisters by the Sea, Mollymook - Mollymook beach

With a single final glimpse of Mollymook Beach and its striking headland coastline, we head north once again creating our way back to Sydney. As we leave, snorkelers and spear fishermen show us what we’ll be missing out on.

Anzac Bridge at sunset

The drive up from Mollymook is genuinely pretty quick. A small more than 3 hours and we’re back in the rush and push of the city, and our anniversary celebrations are just delighted memories. The sun glints by way of the cables of the Anzac Bridge and house beckons us back.

Nespresso Costa Rica Golden Bean Limited Edition

As soon as house, we settle back in and learn Nespresso has released a new Restricted Edition Master Origin – this time from Costa Rica. But this Master Origin appears somehow distinct to the rest.

It is bold adequate to have as a latte and blends completely with the hot milk, but on its personal as an espresso, it is beautiful, and appears substantially far more complicated than its level 7 intensity.

The coffee comes with some beautifully produced cups in the Costa Rica line, which add to the encounter. I do really like the exciting ranges of cups and accessories Nespresso brings out.

Nespresso Costa Rica Golden Bean Limited Edition

Additional investigation tells us that this Costa Rica Master Origin coffee is in truth fairly specific. These Central American beans are all hand-picked then soaked in the hot spring water of a nearby volcano, so probably it is the minerals from the volcanic stream that offers this coffee its intensity.

Either way, the finish outcome is a biscuity, sweet coffee with a scrumptious hazelnut note and a dry finish.

Nespresso Costa Rica Golden Bean Limited Edition

Other coffees accessible in this Master Origin variety have comparable complexities from the way they are processed and treated just before you get to delight in them. Apart from this superb Master Origin from Costa Rica, there are ones to attempt that we’ve talked about just before from Indonesia, Ethiopia, India, Nicaragua and Colombia in the original capsule line.

There are also two in the Vertuo line that we really like as well from Mexico and Colombia.

Nespresso Costa Rica Golden Bean Limited Edition

The other factor I really like about this Costa Rica Master Origin is the story behind the coffee itself. There’s the handpicked fruit and the incredible volcano element to the story as we’ve currently talked about, but also how the locals contact coffee the ‘golden bean’. Coffee is the most prized solution of Costa Rica, which is mentioned to make up about 11% of the country’s GDP.

In a nod of recognition to this, Nespresso sent us the coffee with these stunning small gold leaf hearts to sprinkle on the coffee. It is a show of recognition that they have an understanding of the worth of this crop to Costa Rica and a sign that we need to worth what we’re drinking just as substantially.

Carlingford Bowls Club salmon risotto

I believed we’d finish this Weekly Edition on a meals note – as it is never ever far from my heart – or mouth!

We not too long ago revisited an old haunt in Sydney’s northwest to verify out a new renovation. The Carlingford Sports Club – affectionately ‘Carlo Bowlo’ – made use of to be a quite great spot for a laksa or chicken cashew stir fry, and its schnitty was generally on point as well.

But large modifications right here in this old-college bowls club have brought a wood-fired pizza oven and new out-door dining location, and and a menu that is a lengthy way beyond what you typically come across in a suburban club.

Exhibit #1, grilled salmon risotto and rocket salad. Not negative, ay?

Carling Bowls Club incredible pie

You can just see what’s left of a single of the stone-cooked pizzas in the background, but most magnificent is the club’s slow-cooked pulled beef pie, mash and mushroom gravy.

This factor of beefy beauty is worth coming right here for on its personal. And I’m essentially waiting for the subsequent chance to get back to Carlingford so I can have a different!

Rick Stein's at Bannisters by the Sea - us
