Considering the fact that I was a youngster, I’ve been entranced by two issues: books and faraway locations.
Even though I didn’t leave the nation till I was 15, I explored as a great deal as probable with no going anyplace. I study stacks of books. I took my red wagon to the library. I known as an empty closet my ‘travel room’, exactly where I pasted up a planet map and stacked shelves with my parent’s old National Geographics.
I’ve often been a bookworm, delving into worlds I’d under no circumstances know — from Tolkien’s Middle Earth to the American prairies of late 19th century. But as I grew older, I became increasingly interested in the planet outdoors my Midwestern bubble.
The Small Mermaid in Copenhagen, one particular of the websites I most wanted to see as a youngster
When I became a teenager, I traveled as a great deal as time and funds would enable. I backpacked the Andes and lived with a Spanish loved ones in Andalusia. I hopped on and off trains all through Europe.
I couldn’t get sufficient. Travel set me on fire — I was as desperate for it as I was for books when I was a kid.
More than the years, I’ve noticed I’m not the only reader-cum-traveler. I’ve met several travelers who also occur to be readers. Which tends to make sense. Just after all, getting immersed in a book is not that various from getting immersed in a foreign nation they each offer you portals to new worlds. Each demand imagination and empathy.
I do not truly travel for the websites or scenery (even though they can be excellent, of course). I travel to recognize how other people today reside to speak foreign languages and attempt new foods. To find out about a new way of life.
When you are in a faraway location, even the mundane can captivate you: French street indicators, newspapers written in Cyrillic, Italian voices on the radio. I’m endlessly fascinated by this — how when you are in a foreign location, the quotidian becomes novel. In a way, it is like getting a youngster once more.
Are you a reader and a traveler, also?
