Before you go on to say Valentine’s Day is overrated, let me just stop you right there. I, for one, LOVE Valentine’s Day, (It’s another story that my husband couldn’t care less about it). From surprise gifts and candlelight dinners to true romance and the festive ambiance, there is something special about the day that gives you butterflies in your stomach.
If you are like me, you must start planning to do something special for your special someone well in advance. Perhaps, you are completely clueless as how to go about it. Chocolate and roses are so overdone, and this year, you want the day to be absolutely unique. How about I share a few of the best romantic and cute ideas of things to do on Valentine’s Day? You can thank me later!
1. ✧ Start a Couple’s Bucket List
Let’s start with my favorite Valentine’s Day idea of them all. Do you have some couple goals you wish to achieve this year? Jot it down on a notebook and create your very own bucket list. It can include anything you two dream to do in life together. Perhaps, it can be traveling to Ireland to sleep in a beautiful castle or going far into the north to see the glaciers. It can be a resolution to hit the gym and workout regularly. It can even include binging on Game of Thrones or catching up on your readings. Any fun activities or experiences should be on the list!

2. ✧ Eat Breakfast in Bed
How about dishing up a little love by preparing a delicious breakfast for your beloved and serving it in bed? As they say, good food is the way to someone’s heart. You can make some waffles or pancakes and jazz them up with whipped cream and strawberries. You can even sprinkle some chocolate syrup. Break some eggs and cook a scrumptious cheese omelet with some toast. Most importantly, don’t forget the morning coffee! After it is done, place the food on the bed tray with some roses and a cute little love note.
Hey husbands—the wife loves breakfast in bed! If you’re worried about making it, here’s some help:
3. ✧ Slow Dance to “Your” Song
Don’t we all have a song that reminds us of the time when we fell in love? Remember the early days when you both were nervous and giggly, and holding hands gave you jitters and enveloped you in warmth at the same time? The first kiss and even the first fight over the silliest issue… Oh, those lovely days! Bring them back by putting on YOUR song and slow dancing to it.
4. ✦ Stay in a Suite
Pack away a few belongings and go on a short couple’s retreat. I would especially recommend this if you are stressed out parents or burned out workaholics. Send your kids off to their dear old grandparents, cancel all the appointments, and book a cozy suite for just the two of you. Spend your time lazily snuggled up with each other in bed, watch a romantic movie on Netflix, order away your comfort food and talk to your heart’s desire with zero interruptions and diaper explosions.
5. ✧ Recreate Your First Date
The giggling girl, the lame jokes he cracked, and those stealing glances caught red-handed… Oh, and that restaurant with dim lights and weird food that somehow became a favorite place in your mind. Would you two like to relive that night? Dress up, be sure to put on the very same cherry-red lipstick and that green tie and plan to meet each other at 8. This year, your Valentine’s Day will be quite memorable! Recreating a first date is also very popular for marriage proposals. Just saying.
Here is some helpful resources for checking this goal off the Valentine’s bucket list:
6. ✧ Stay Up All Night
Do you remember when the two of you just started your relationship and would spend the wee hours of the morning just talking on the phone? Try to replicate that special period of time by planning an all-nighter that may include chatting, laughing, dancing or taking a late night stroll.

7. ✧ Take a Bubble Bath (with Champagne & Strawberries!)
Bubble baths are not only romantic, they are actually quite therapeutic. They have a power to cleanse and soothe you inside out. If you are a little harried and short on time, take out an hour and jump into the bathtub with your significant other. Set up the mood! Light scented candles, dim the lights, put on relaxing music, fill up the bath with water and add some salts and bath bombs, and plunge! Add some strawberries and a bottle of champagne and this is one of the must things to do on Valentine’s Day.
Want to make it the most memorable bath for the two of you? Get inspiration from Romantic Baths for Two and How to Set Up a Romantic Bath. Don’t forget these cute Love Bath Bombs!
8. ✦ Eat a Fancy Dinner Out
Sometimes it will be ages since your girlfriend and you went out to have a decent dinner without looking at your clocks. Plan to have a night out having a lavish meal in a five-star restaurant without having to worry about any pending housework that needs to be done or work commitments. Relax, head out to your favorite fancy restaurant and indulge in gourmet food in a midst of tranquility.
9. ✧ Create a Music Playlist of Your Relationship
Compile all the songs that have meaning to your relationship and put them on a cd. What song was playing on your first date? Before you had the title of “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”? What was your wedding song? Is there a band that brings back wonderful memories? You can make it a ritual to listen to the tunes on each Valentine’s Day.

10. ✧ Stay in Bed All Day (& Night)
Do you often feel that you are losing touch with each other? There is this gap that keeps on stretching when you try to talk and connect, with running a household and busy careers, there just seems like too many other things to do. Reconnect now! Give up all the chores, take the day off and spend a lazy afternoon (and night!) in bed this Valentine’s Day. Talk, cuddle, gossip, laugh and much more *wink wink*. You will notice the difference instantly.
11. ✧ Eat Fondue Together
Are you two foodies who would simply love to dip in fondue and forget about everything else? Grab a huge pot of fondue, some bread, and forks, and eat away! It is a Swiss and French Savoyard dish that features melted cheese over a portable stove. If you want sweet rather than savory, you can go for chocolate fondue that has sweet tidbits of fruits and pastries. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it?
This is a delicious recipe for fondue that I brought all the way back from Switzerland. And here’s the cutest red fondue pot or for something even easier, an electric one!
12. ✧ Share Chocolate Covered Strawberries
Do you want to keep your Valentine’s Day low-key with no expensive gifts or a lavish dinner? Just grab some strawberries, dip them in Nutella and devour them together. Honestly, you can’t beat that! Simplicity has its own charm. Sometimes you don’t need lavish activities, all you need is to lie down on the couch together, watch some TV and gobble down some chocolate-covered strawberries. Try it!

13. ✦ Get a Couples Massage
A couples massage is one of the hottest treatments at luxury spas all over the world. What could be more romantic than lying side-by-side with your boyfriend, girlfriend or spouse in the most relaxing environment? 15. ✦ Watch the Sunset
To watch a glorious sundown across the horizon, you don’t need to be somewhere far off in a tropical isle. You can easily witness a stunning sunset in your very own town. All you need is a clear view. My husband and I often take a stroll to a field across our house, and when twilight strikes, we sit down on a bench, and quietly gaze at the sun disappearing below the horizon. It is simply serene.
16. ✦ Spend the Night at a B&B
A must on your Valentine’s Bucket List is to spend a romantic night at a quaint Bed & Breakfast. B&Bs are a nice alternative to a hotel. Not only are they generally more cost effective, but you will also be cooked a delicious breakfast in the morning that is much better than the typical continental buffet.
There are amazing bed & breakfasts all over the world, but it doesn’t even have to be far from home, B&B’s make a great overnight getaway too! And if you’ve never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast, here’s what you’re missing out on.
17. ✦ Make Love in an Exciting Location
Get out of the bedroom and take your lovemaking to a sexy location. Joining the mile high club, which is getting intimate in an airplane, seems to be a popular choice. But, there are many other creative ideas too. How about getting busy on top of the washer, on a porch swing, in a field of wildflowers or on a rooftop. Or possibly all of them?
If none of those ideas grab you, here are some others:
18. ✧ Fill the House with Candles
Want to send a secret ‘love’ message without resorting to fancy dinners and surprise gifts? Light up your whole house with scented (and unscented) candles! Create a calming ambience where you two can simply relax, talk to each other and gaze at the flickering flames surrounding you. If you are worried about starting a fire, then try these flameless tealight candles.

About five years ago I wrote a love letter to my future self, but it got me to thinking that I had never written one to my husband of over twenty years. This February 14th, remind your significant other why you chose to be with them, and what’s so special about them.
21. ✦ Buy a Lottery Ticket and Share Your Dreams
Sometimes we are so lost in living and making both ends meet that we forget to focus on our dreams and passions. We have plans to achieve our goals and they start out good, but then comes responsibilities and the ever-increasing workload. Then, some of our dreams naturally get tucked away and then forgotten. This Valentine’s Day reawaken your dreams and take a leap of faith. Buy a lottery ticket! I know it sounds crazy but who knows, you might be lucky enough to win. But, even if you are not the winner, sharing what you would do with the winnings makes for a great conversation.
